What's TikTok and Why Should I Care?

If you’re wondering why TikTok is the hottest social media platform right now, it’s because of the organic traffic it brings in like no other platform on the market today. In this article, we'll discuss TikTok and why you should pay attention to it as a marketing tool.

Its history

Tik Tok was developed by Beijing-based startup musical.ly in 2014. The idea was inspired by a short video app called Douyin (which translates to snack song) that went viral in China a few years prior, allowing users to record up to 20 seconds of video using their mobile phone cameras. Musical.ly’s founders wanted an English version of Douyin for Western audiences and subsequently changed its name to Tik Tok.

What it looks like

TikTok is a social video platform that allows people to share short video clips (six seconds or less) with one another. TikTok just increased the max video length from 3 minutes to 10 minutes (it was originally 1 minute).  The app itself is the number 1 downloaded app in 2021, with over 10 million new users registering each day. While it used to be heavily associated with music content, TikTok has developed into a social media platform all its own—one that was built entirely through organic traffic.

How it works

Most people have never heard of it, but millions of users have signed up for TikTok within just a few months of its launch. Organic traffic is driving its growth because those who are signing up for it are signing up because their friends are using it. This signals that there will be a user base that you can target if you find success with creating content for it.

How to use it

Instead of relying on YouTube to do all your marketing for you, you can use TikTok as a second platform to drive organic traffic. When people like what they see on TikTok, they'll often head over to YouTube to check out your original video. Use links in your bio or in your caption that direct fans over to your channel.
